Abstract:
Butterfly effects have been attracting attentions of experts from gravity theory, condensed matter theory, and quantum information theory. It is revealed from gravity theory that butterfly effects occur in high energy scattering processes near the horizon, and hence become an intrinsic property of gravity theory, as well as its holographic dual. In this talk I will introduce our recent work on the relation between the butterfly effects and phase transitions (quantum & thermal). Our work revealed that butterfly velocity, as a characteristic quantity of a quantum chaotic system, can diagnose phase transitions. In light of recent progresses on measuring the out-of-time-order correlation, our results can be tested in laboratory.
